Sharpening Practicum with Eric Lowe
In this workshop we'll go over what makes a fighting sword sharp at all, what you need to sharpen your own swords--and then we'll practice. A lot of people are afraid of sharpening their expensive swords, but there's no need to be. You can learn how to sharpen your own swords, and how to practice your sharpening skills, without putting your blade at risk. In this workshop, you'll learn the physical skills necessary to sharpen reliably, how to practice those skills at home, and receive in-person feedback on your sharpening skills--all without sacrificing your sharps.
This workshop is best if you have a sword of the type you would wish to sharpen (even a blunt version will do).
Modern Sword Design Based on Historical Studies with Chris Fields
Modern Sword design based on historical studies is a class that covers how Sterling Armory designs and makes modern HEMA competition swords based on studies of historical swords in museums and castles from all over the world.
Chris is the owner of Sterling Armory and has been a sword maker and practitioner for over 25 years. He studies and trains in various sword arts and forms from Chinese swordsmanship and JSA sword arts, to I.33, Fiore, and Meyer, and more. Alongside practical training, Chris has also worked for various theater productions as a fight director and lead armorer. Lately Chris has been competing in Hema cutting competitions, racking up several medals in the last few years. His ultimate passion is making swords, and he combines his experience using blades with his constant hands on studies of original sword pieces from various museums, castles, and Armouries from all over the world.
Chris's other job as a chief engineer in aerospace also provides a unique perspective on material science and engineering in sword design, for both historical pieces to be studied as well modern made reproductions. Chris works with the Royal Armouries in London and Leeds where a few Sterling Armory blades were made for their live demo teams and hands on museum exhibits.
